World Rugby Sevens

Westpac Stadium, Wellington
February 5 & 6, 2010

Great to see the Boys get off to a winning start @ Dubai with a 24-12 victory over Samoa in the final. To get there they beat off Kenya in the quarters and Fiji (0-19) in the semi-final. Samoa beat Australia and England to meet NZ in the final. South Africa (current IRB champs) were bundled out by Fiji in the quarter finals.

New Zealand then went on to beat Fiji to claim their second IRB Sevens World Series Cup title at the South Africa Sevens in George.

Led by their inspirational captain DJ Forbes, the New Zealanders triumphed 21-12. Forbes, Ben Souness and Save Tokula all scored for the kiwis, who dominated at the breakdown and applied the same physicality that brought riches a week before in Dubai.

And then of course it was Wellington and Fiji were victorious with New Zealand bundled out by Samoa in the semi finals.

In the words of the immortal Gordon Tietjens

"We've won it five times here, but just not today. I think we played pretty well in this tournament up until now and it's just one of those shabby semi finals. We missed a couple of tackles and that was probably to the key for us yesterday, the way we defended, so we're pretty disappointed in that.

"I think we lacked a bit of accuracy too, too much width and there's a bit of a breeze out here and obviously we didn't play well enough for the conditions.

"They broke us and they're very good in support as well. They matched up upfront physically and they took it too us and they've probably been the sleeping giant of the tournament. They were always going to get up for New Zealand, they've done it in the past."

Emosi Vucago, Fiji captain(Cup winners)

"We've sacrificed a lot. In Dubai and George we lost in the semi finals and we went back to Fiji and trained hard. On New Year's eve we were in camp and that's why we've won the tournament today - we're very proud."
